Chapter Seventeen

CHARLENE WAS GOING to be the death of him, River thought as he slid down the wall opposite her bedroom. Maybe death was preferable after spending the last five days being jerked from his bed every time one of the motion sensors in the house was triggered, specifically the sensors installed on the doors and windows of the ground floor where Charlene and Emily slept. Each time they went off River bolted downstairs with the gun stashed in the drawer by his bed gripped tight in his hand. And you’d think coming face-to-face with loaded handgun would be enough to scare a person into not trying to break out of the house... but when he’d pointed the damn weapon at Charlene, all she’d done was scowl at him, slam the bedroom door in his face before waiting an hour and trying again.

And he was fucking exhausted.

It wasn’t like River could sleep during the day, not when he needed to keep an eye on Charlene then too. The only saving grace was that there hadn’t been any attacks on the family’s warehouses in Geelong since the threat had been scrawled on the wall of the store. But it was only a matter of time before the triad struck again, and River wasn’t sure what he’d do then. He couldn’t trust Charlene to stay put, and yet he couldn’t stay here and play babysitter either. River took his responsibilities to the Tomasi Famiglia seriously, something he knew Charlene would understand when the creed of the Outlaw Saints ran along similar lines. Or she might have if she wasn’t hellbent on proving a point and escaping the safety of his place in Portarlington.

Sitting here wasn’t going to magically mean River could sleep, either.

He was getting too old for this late-night shit. Give him a room of wealthy arrogant socialites who thought nothing of wasting that money up their nose over this any day. A late night of schmoozing meant a morning of snoozing. Dealing with Charlene involved no schmoozing or snoozing... just a very weary, sleep-deprived, and heavily caffeinated River who wasn’t sure he could fend off anyone if they decided to attack his property. And that wasn’t a good situation for anyone.

“What the fuck, River?” Charlene snarled, her voice and not the snick of the door opening roused River from his light sleep.

River hadn’t intended to sleep at all. Close his eyes for a brief second and nothing more. His body and brain had obviously conspired to enact a different set of plans.

“Just making sure you’re not going to try anything, Charlene. Nothing worse than being woken by the blasted alarms.”

She stood in the doorway of the room, soft light from the lamp next to her bed lighting her up like some ethereal angel. More like the devil he thought with a snort. If it wasn’t her attempts to escape keeping him awake at night, then it was definitely the knowledge that she slept every night in one of his t-shirts.
